Biog

I live in Hampshire, on the South Coast of England and have been composing since 1973. In 1989 I started writing short stories and poetry. In 1997 I started conducting. In 2001 I started songwriting. In 2004 I started composing for film. I have written for films in a variety of genres: horror, comedy, superhero, spoof, urban, sci-fi fantasy, drama, thriller, romance, action, black comedy, documentary. I have written for the following formats: music for trailer, short and feature; as well as songs and standalone orchestral works. I have written for film companies around the world, including: America, Europe and Australia. Films I have composed music for have appeared in the Sony TropFest 2006(the World's largest short film festival) as well as the Cannes Film Festival 2006. 

As a Performer

I started playing in 1969 and have played, with varying levels of proficiency, the following instruments (highest levels of proficiency first):

  • Euphonium (tenor tuba)

  • Percussion

  • Drum Kit

  • Keyboards

  • Trombone

  • Electric guitar

  • Violin

  • Classic guitar

  • Recorder

  • Flute

  • Clarinet

I performed as a euphonium soloist between 1975 and 1997 in concerts and contests around England. During my time as a euphonium player I performed at the Royal Albert Hall in the Championship Finals of Great Britain in 1979 and 1980 as well as being in the band that came 2nd at the Grand Shield in 1986.

In 1998 I was the euphonium player in the brass quartet that won the Southern Counties Amateur Brass Association Open Championships.

As a Conductor/Musical Director

In 1997 I received my first appointment as Musical Director, a position which I have now held in a total of eight brass ensembles (including one "acting" appointment).

My appointments as Musical Director include:

  • 2x full contesting brass bands

  • 3x junior bands

  • 2x concert bands

  • 1x 10 piece brass ensemble

During my various tenures as Musical Director I have toured in France and Germany, competed at National and local levels, performed at various concert venues in the provinces as well as conducting at several ceremonial occasions.

 

As the occasion arises I am called upon to be guest conductor for rehearsals and/or concerts.

 

In 2005 I conducted the band that became the WBBA Wessex Champions and I was awarded the Best Conductor award for best musical interpretation of the day in all sections of the contest.

As an Adjudicator

In 2001 I was invited to adjudicate at a solo contest. Since then I have adjudicated at a further solo contest and a brass band entertainment contest.
